Environmental Labels: A Marketing Strategy Every Business Should Know

Product labels or product tags affixed to packaging, whether it’s paper boxes, corrugated boxes, or other types of packaging, play a significant role in brand building. In addition to helping products reach the target audience and increasing sales, environmental labels serve as a marketing strategy that can effectively compete with rivals.

Why is the Environmental Label Important for Business?

An environmental label (Eco-Labeling) is a label granted to products or goods that, throughout their production process and even after use, have a smaller environmental impact than other brands offering the same or similar products.

Environmental labels placed on eco-friendly packaging, such as recycled paper boxes, corrugated boxes, paper cups, paper glasses, and other biodegradable packaging, indicate the product’s environmental friendliness. This informs consumers that the product emphasizes environmental quality. Choosing products with an environmental label helps reduce environmental impact as well.

Environmental Labels According to ISO Standards

Environmental labels based on ISO standards that are affixed to corrugated paper boxes, food and beverage packaging, or other types of packaging are categorized into three types:

1. Type 1 Environmental Label (ISO 14024)

This type of label demonstrates environmental friendliness and is granted by an independent organization to products that meet specified requirements. The evaluation is based on the product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle. In Thailand, the Type 1 environmental label is known as the “Green Label” and is a key mechanism that promotes the production and consumption of environmentally friendly products.

2. Type 2 Environmental Label

This type of label is used by producers, distributors, or exporters to indicate the environmental qualities of their products. It may be displayed in the form of text, symbols, or images on corrugated boxes, offset-printed boxes, and other packaging, such as promoting energy conservation and recycling.

3. Type 3 Environmental Label (ISO 14025)

This type of label shows the environmental impact of the product by presenting comprehensive data. An independent agency or central organization is responsible for verifying the accuracy of the information before it is displayed on the product.

Therefore, products or goods that carry one of these three labels on their packaging, such as food and beverage packaging or corrugated paper boxes, offset-printed boxes, indicate the quality of the product from the choice of raw materials to production, transportation, packaging, and use. It also shows the environmental impact of the product, demonstrating sincerity and transparency to consumers. This can serve as a significant competitive advantage in marketing for skillful entrepreneurs.
